Have you heard the hype yet? Have you watched the video yet? Motrin has put out this ad and in turn smacked all babywearers in the face with it. Go watch the video HERE if they haven't pulled it down by now. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after watching it. And in the case that you can't watch the video Barb over at Perfectly Natural Photography has typed the ad out verbatim (thank you!) she has also started a list of others who are annoyed by this ad campaign.
The video says...
Wearing your baby seems to be in fashion.
I mean, in theory it’s a great idea.
There’s the front baby carrier, sling, schwing, wrap, pouch.
And who knows what else they’ve come up with. Wear your baby on your side, your front, go hands free.
Supposedly, it’s a real bonding experience.
They say that babies carried close to the bod tend to cry less than others.
But what about me? Do moms that wear their babies cry more than those who don’t?
I sure do!
These things put a ton of strain on your back, your neck, your shoulders. Did I mention your back?!
I mean, I’ll put up with the pain because it’s a good kind of pain; it’s for my kid.
Plus, it totally makes me look like an official mom.
And so if I look tired and crazy, people will understand why.
Wow. Can you believe that? And who knew that those of us that push strollers or even only use them on occasion aren't official moms?! It's a terrible mom. I only wonder why they would actually move forward with this campaign. Did anyone care to ask a babywearing mom what their take on this would be?
I personally think that it is wonderful that babywearing is becoming more mainstream, that more and more you are seeing other moms (and dads) out there wearing their little ones. It's a good thing and it IS a real bonding experience. It's great for the baby and for the mom. I don't know how I ever managed with my first. My carriers have been my best friend with my second born. I have been able to chase around my active daughter while not having to put my son down. I've been able to make birthday cakes, sweep the floors, and shop all without having to feel that my new baby was holding me back. And if you are wearing properly in the correct carrier then it shouldn't hurt. Sure carrying your 25 lb baby on your hip will wear you out after a while just the same if you put that 25 lb little guy in a sling. But I found if I am wearing my little guy for longer periods there are better carriers out there designed to make that comfortable and easy on my body as well. Check out mei tais. They are a blessing for longer periods.
This morning I vacuumed nearly my entire house with my 18 month, 26 1/2 lb son strapped on my back in my Silly Goose Baby carrier and when I was done both of us were happy. And you know what? Not once did I think "OUCH! I could really use some medication."
Seriously, Motrin. I am shocked and disgusted by this ad campaign and I hope that you trash it immediately.
If you feel the same e-mail them and let them know just like I (and many many many others) have.

That is soooo completely horrendous!!! I am amazed at the depths companies will stoop!! It is so wrong on so many levels!
that is awful! Im emailing!
I'm lovin your blog as well...read all the posts I missed!!! Those baby carriers are not only functional..but beautiful as well.
I love(d) having my little ones snuggle up to me!
I fired off an email to Motrin as soon as I read this. Jeepers.
Then I tried to explain to my hubby what I was so worked up about and all I did was sputter and spurt. I guess I used up all my logic in the email. :)
That's awful. I haven't seen the ad, but I'll have to check it out.
I wear my babies occasionally, but not really around the house much. I think everyone should be able to decide for themselves though and not be made to feel bad about it either way!
Wow! That is crazy.
Looks like all the emails and attention has worked. The link doesn't seem to load for me.
That is craaaaazyyyyyy!!! I am outraged! Bunch of Madison Avenue numbnuts. I will be emailing. Thanks for the heads up!
I saw that first start up on Twitter last night...
I think I might be the only one NOT all that offended by it. It's tacky but seems to me they just got a whole bunch of free advertising you know??
Hey, thanks for just plain talking to me...these days I sure need it!
I saw this and thought it just seemed so strange. They really were ripping on babywearing, but in the same sense saying do it for your kid. So weird to even go there. Why?
Glad you also spoke up about this campaign - it's ridicules! Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I hope Motrin takes the ad down out of embarrassment soon!
CRAP I can't see it at work! DANG IT!
AMEN. I also have the video html on my blog to so you can watch it-if you want it stop on by and grab it-it's also made it to youtube now too.
And even though the ad doesn't really make me mad, it does make me sad when I think of how it might turn people off to babywearing-I myself would not have tried it if I saw such an ad, because I don't know anyone that babywears beyond the internet. Thank goodness I met some of you guys and tried it, because it saved me from going crazy with both my kids! Shame on Motrin.
Amen sister.
