I'm a hippie

Wednesday was the playgroup Halloween party.  Parents were encouraged to dress up and after a while we did finally come up with costumes.  The Husband said I should go as a hippie so I took and ran with it.  I picked up the fabric from JoAnn's just earlier this week and went to work.  I altered my favorite (but seen MUCH better days) jeans to turn them into bell bottoms, made a vest and attached a peace sign to the back, and made a belt and headband.  I thought it turned out well.

The party itself was nice too.  Halfway through The Husband's bag wouldn't stay up so he ended up changing out of it.  We did manage a quick family plus one shot.  I'm not exactly sure how we picked up the extra Princess Aurora, but she's cute so I ok'ed the picture.  ;)

Isn't my little monster adorable?  I just love the padded belly.

We're all looking forward to Trick-or-Treating this evening and just hoping that the temperature stays up a bit so that it isn't too chilly for my little princess.  Happy Halloween!!!

Jack-O-Lanterns

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

What is Halloween without some jack-o-lanterns?

Since our original plan of picking them at the pumpkin patch while we visited Boyd's Bear Country didn't work out quite that way, we opted for a trip to our local nursery and picked up pumpkins there.  After picking them up we headed home to carve them.

K-Girl was a good sport.  The pumpkin guts grossed her out, but she played along and got her hands dirty.

Now, E-Man on the other hand loved his pumpkin as long as it was fully intact...

carving3

But as soon as the lid came off hysterics ensued.  He was terrified of pumpkin guts.  After taking a picture of the horror we decided that perhaps it would be best if he went to bed rather than staying up late to carve all the pumpkins.
carving4

After he was asleep the rest of us went to work.  K-Girl drew the face on her pumpkin that she wanted and then we worked together at cutting it out.

And once we were done she gladly did her impression of each of the jack-o-lanterns.

And then we took them outside and lit them...

Then it was time for K-Girl to get some sleep.  Once both kids were sleeping The Husband and I got to work.  And who better to come and visit for coffee and pumpkin carving than BabyDawg the Halloween kitty.

The Husband decided that a Volkswagen symbol would be pretty nifty to put into his pumpkin.  I think it turned out well.
carving12

And I settled on a recycling sign.  Fun!  (Pardon me in my jammie glory)

And once we were all done we took our jack-o-lanterns outside to light them as well.  By this time it was raining quite nicely and I got slightly wet taking the pictures.  So don't mind that large dark mass at the top of the picture.  That was my hand shielding my camera from getting wet.  I got a little too low.  Oops

I hope everyone has a very Happy Halloween and eats enough candy to make all of the dentists turn a nice profit in the coming months!  I'm hoping E-Man gets some good stuff this year, because after this year I'm sure that sharing candy with Mom and Dad won't fly.

Fall Visit to Boyd's Bear Country

This past weekend we decided to take a day trip to Boyd's Bear Country in Gettysburg, PA.  We went last year and had a lot of fun doing a hay maze and seeing all the bears.  Our plans were to visit the pumpkin patch this year, but sadly due to the amount of rain we all got on Saturday the patch had been flooded and they just brought the rest of the pumpkins up to the building.  We still had a good time and the kids really enjoyed it.

And what do you know I actually got a GOOD picture of both kids together, too!

K-Girl wanted her picture taken with the witch bear and dog.  She's hugging her new buddy, "Princess".  Princess was only $10.00!  What a steal compared to the building your own bear that starts at $19.95 and adds on with clothes and whatnot, or the dogs which end up at around $40 and the newborn bears that start at I believe $35.00.  Score for the parents...or at least our wallets.  E-Man picked a brown one just the same.

Later we decided since there was no pumpkin patch that we would do the hayride.  So we got our tickets and had a seat on the bench to wait.
boyds3

Soon enough the tractor came back for our turn.
boyds4

This friendly bear came by to pay us a visit.  He was alright as long as he was outside of the wagon, but later he climbed aboard to come along and poor E-Man went into hysterics.  The nerve of that bear crashing our hayride.  ;)

And Mommy and E-Man.  I wish you could touch that bear.  It really is one of the softest furs I've felt.

The tractor dropped us off at the corn maze and we decided to give it a try.  But not before each of the kids took a turn looking like a giant piece of candy corn, because you know who can resist sticking their face in one of these?

And then off we went.  It was challenging - especially carrying E-Man nearly the entire way.  The path was more than a bit soggy from the rain the day before.  But we did manage to find it, but we didn't find all the letters for the game we were playing.  We could have been in there for hours.

I'm glad we went though.  It was a perfect Fall day.  A light jacket or no jacket was needed.  It was nice and sunny.  And who doesn't like 3 full floors of teddy bear fun?!

Apples, Pumpkins, and Gourds - Oh My!

Earlier this month we dropped K-Girl off at school for the morning and E-Man and I met up with our playgroup friends for a fun morning.  It was a lot chillier than I had anticipated, but it was a great time.  There were two tractors since there was such a good turn out.  We climbed aboard the blue tractor's wagon.

hayride1

And all the mommies proceeded to break out the cameras for some pictures and self pictures.

hayride2

Our first stop was for apples.  We were to pick 4 apples per person.  E-Man had a great time but had a little difficulties pulling them off if he could actually reach them.

hayride3

Most of the good ones were out of his reach though.

hayride4

Another mommy and I traded cameras and took pictures of each other so here we are.  It's just too bad E-Man didn't give a hoot about the camera and wanted to take off after some more apples.

hayride5

After we picked our apples, we climbed back on the wagon and went off to the pumpkin patch.  We were each allowed to pick one pumpkin and 2 gourds.  They were all littler pumpkins so E-Man was happy to pick them.

hayride6

But he REALLY enjoyed the gourds.  If it were up to him he would have brought a dozen or so of them home.

hayride7

And once on the wagon again E-Man decided that he wanted to try his tasty apples.  This was his first apple experience, well other than when I peel and cut them up into "safe" sizes.  And to be honest this made me very nervous.  Yes, I'm that mom.  But I'll be happy to report that he ate nearly that entire apple and is still with us today.  ;)  But just because he ate the whole thing doesn't mean it was easy.  It clearly was a struggle at times.

I don't think we were out of the parking lot when this little guy was out for the count.

It was a really fun time.  We really wanted to go as a family, but it just didn't pan out this year.  We opted instead to pick up our pumpkins at the garden center down the road on Monday.  Those pictures are coming soon.

Fall Coat for K-Girl

This is officially my first sewing project from a real pattern.  It had me in tears this morning until my mom came to my rescue and drove over here to show me what to do.  I was so frustrated.  But after she gave me help with the first few steps I was able to finish up the coat.  I'm excited about how it has turned out.  I'm excited about the fact that I made it.  The coat is made from a Sew Baby! pattern called Wonder Jacket & Flower Pot Hats.  It's reversible too which is fun.  So without further adieu here are the pictures...

This is the way I would mostly wear it...

I have a question for you though.  If you would be so kind as to give me your opinion in the comments I would be appreciative.  The pattern recommends using binding or serging the edges with contrasting thread to give it a more finished look.  I detest binding and I don't have a serger.  My option is to zigzag over the edge which would give it a serged look.  My question is should I?  I'm not sure.  I purchased thread that matches the darker blue in the fleece.  Color-wise I love it but I'm not sure if I should do it or leave it as is.  So please, what do you think?
